Shakespeare is now wearin’ spurs!
Saddle up for the ride of your life as La Tapatia and Alvin High School present William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” set in the 1890’s western town of Athens, Texas! In our version, Shakespeare’s fairies are Native Americans, the lovers are school marms, rough riders, and minister’s daughters and the town is populated with saloon girls and cowboys shootin’ it out and kickin’ up their heels. This is not the Shakespeare you read in school!
“The course of true love never did run smooth” claims Lysander (played by sophomore Sean McChesney) as he plans to elope with his sweetheart Hermia (senior Brittany San Miguel). Their plans are thwarted by a rival suitor, Demetrius, (junior Michael Welch) and the bookish Helena (junior Brooke Roeder) who pines for him as they pursue the couple into a forest filled with mystical Indians causing mayhem and hilarity. Further comic craziness occurs when a group of well-meaning but ill-equipped cowboys gather in the woods to rehearse a surprise play to celebrate the wedding of Sheriff “Duke” Theseus (junior Bret Van Wagner) to his betrothed, Miss Polly (played by senior Madison Polston), the buxom proprietess of the local saloon and dance hall. Over 75 AHS students are involved in the show as cast members, stage management and technical crews.
Performances are November 11th, and 12th at 7pm, and November 13th at 2pm in the Alvin High School Auditorium. “Thanks to a generous donation by La Tapatia and sponsorship by numerous additional local businesses (see below) we have been able to fund our production without raising admission prices,” says Director and AHS Theatre Teacher Laurie Reese. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors, and members of the AISD 65 club are admitted free. So “head’em up and move’em out” and gallop on over to AHS to see “what fools these mortals be.”
